Description:  In August of 2020, Governor John Bel Edwards established Louisiana’s Climate Initiatives Task Force to explore and recommend strategies to reduce Louisiana’s greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050. The Task Force, its six sector committees, and four advisory groups have been meeting extensively since November of 2020 with the assistance of the planning team at the Governor’s Coastal Office and the Water Institute of the Gulf. This panel will provide an overview of the origins and mission of the Task Force, an understanding of the planning process being used to elicit input and engagement from multiple stakeholder groups and the public, and provide an update on the progress being made and a look ahead to the final phase of the Task Force’s work. Finally, the panel will also cover Louisiana’s efforts to partner with the federal government and other interested parties to bring offshore wind electricity production to the Gulf of Mexico.
